Most medical authorities in ancient Greece agreed that sexual intercourse was necessary for female health. "According to the Hippocratics, regular intercourse kept the womb in good working order and ensured the proper flow of menstrual fluid. When retained, this fluid could putrify and lead to madness and suicidal tendencies, particularly in young women who had not yet married" (Greek and Roman Sexualities: A Sourcebook by Jennifer Larson).
